The Osun State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has announced the suspension of former Interior Minister and ex-Governor, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola.
This decision was made following a resolution by the Ilesa East Local Government Executive Committee of APC, which accused Aregbesola of engaging in anti-party activities.
The allegations against him include "party fictionalisation," forming splinter groups, collaborating with opposition parties to destabilize the APC in Osun, and making public outbursts against party leaders, including President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The suspension is seen as a major rift within the APC's ranks, with Aregbesola's faction yet to respond to these allegations. The Osun State APC Executive Committee submitted a formal resolution to the APC’s National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, emphasizing that Aregbesola's actions have "fueled internal divisions," threatening the party's cohesion during a crucial phase. The State Disciplinary Committee has requested a formal response from Aregbesola to ensure due process according to the party’s constitution.
Sources close to Aregbesola have characterized the suspension as politically motivated, suggesting it is part of a premeditated attempt by the party’s leadership in the state to remove him from the APC. As of the report's release, Aregbesola had not made any official remarks on the suspension, leaving the situation open to various interpretations.
