The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced plans to set up magistrate courts within airports across the country to expedite the prosecution of touts.
This initiative aims to address the rising cases of harassment and illegal activities by touts in Nigerian airports.
The Managing Director of FAAN, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, disclosed this development during a meeting with heads of security agencies at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.
"There are people who have absolutely no business being at the airport, and they continue to create issues for us," she stated.
"We have an anti-touting taskforce, and as it is, we are going to start the prosecution onsite of those engaging in these illicit activities or loitering around the airport environment and harassing passengers."
This move comes in response to increasing complaints from travelers about harassment by touts.
In May 2024, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, assured travelers that efforts were underway to eliminate touts from Nigerian airports.
In line with this, FAAN reported the arrest of 90 touts in 2022.
The establishment of these courts is part of FAAN's broader strategy to enhance airport safety and efficiency. This includes the introduction of an armed unit to combat thuggery and extortion.
The recent meeting aimed to update stakeholders on these developments, discuss strategic goals, and explore ways to improve passenger experience and facilitation.
"This does not happen elsewhere around the world, and the airport should be a safe space," Mrs. Kuku emphasized, highlighting the importance of creating a secure environment for all airport users.
FAAN's commitment to ensuring safer and more efficient airport operations shows its dedication to improving the overall travel experience in Nigeria.
