The Nigerian federal government took a step towards sustainable transportation by handing over 15 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses to transport unions in Abuja.
This initiative is part of President Bola Tinubu's Renewed Hope Clean Energy Transport Scheme, aimed at mitigating the effects of fuel subsidy removal and promoting cleaner, more affordable energy solutions.

Minister of Transportation, Sen. Said Alkali, emphasized the government's commitment to empowering citizens while transitioning to a cleaner energy economy. He stated, "These buses symbolize the government’s commitment to empowering citizens while transitioning to a cleaner energy economy."
The initiative is designed not only to reduce transport costs for operators and commuters but also to cut down on carbon emissions, thereby contributing to a greener environment.
The buses will initially offer free rides to residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) for 40 days, after which discounted fares will be available. Engr. Michael Oluwagbemi, Programme Director of the Presidential CNG Initiative, noted, "This initiative is safer, more reliable, and available.
On these buses for the next 40 days, people will enjoy free transportation as part of the benefits of this administration." Despite the positive reception, there are concerns about the maintenance of the buses and the limited number provided.
