Federal Workers Demand Urgent Action from President Tinubu to Address Outstanding Arrears, Reverse PMS Price Hike

Federal workers in Nigeria, under the banner of the Federal Workers Forum (FWF), have called on President Bola Tinubu's administration to address pressing financial grievance.

The workers are urging the government to settle outstanding salaries and entitlements, which include years of promotion arrears, duty tour allowances, salary increments, wage awards, and adjustments to the new national minimum wage.

Additionally, they are demanding the reversal of the Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) price hike, which has significantly impacted their cost of living.

During an online meeting, the union highlighted the severe economic challenges faced by workers and citizens alike.

Comrade Andrew Emelieze, the National Coordinator of FWF, expressed the dire situation, stating, "Mr President, Sir, the situation at hand is really very bad, worrisome, and disturbing. Nigerians are dying of hunger." He further criticized the government's policies, describing them as "harsh, hostile, and rash," and equated them to "capital punishment" for the populace.

The communiqué issued after the meeting underscored the hardships brought about by the removal of the petrol subsidy, which has led to a dramatic increase in fuel prices from ₦187 to ₦1300. This, coupled with the devaluation of the naira, has made basic goods and services unaffordable for many Nigerians.

The workers lamented that despite these challenges, the government continues to owe them various allowances and increments.

Emelieze also pointed out the inadequacy of the new national minimum wage, which adds only ₦40,000 to federal workers' salaries, calling it "a national embarrassment and a disgrace."

The workers are appealing for immediate intervention from President Tinubu to alleviate their plight, emphasizing that "federal government workers are starving, and almost everyone is on loan to survive the day."
