The Nigerian Federal Government has approved an increase in the monthly allowance for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members, raising it from ₦33,000 to ₦77,000, effective from July 2024.

This decision follows an upward review of the national minimum wage from ₦30,000 to ₦70,000, as stipulated by the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024.

The announcement was made by Caroline Embu, NYSC's Acting Director of Information and Public Relations. According to Embu, the approval was contained in a letter from the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, dated the same day and signed by its Chairman, Ekpo Nta. Before this increase, corps members were paid a monthly allowance of ₦33,000, which had been set following a previous minimum wage hike to ₦30,000 in 2019.

The new allowance aims to alleviate financial pressures on corps members and boost their motivation during their service year. Brigadier-General Yusha’u Ahmed, the Director General of NYSC, expressed gratitude to the Federal Government for the timely gesture. He stated that the increase "would not only bring succour to the corps members but also spur them to do more in service to the nation."
