The Federal Government of Nigeria has launched a major food intervention initiative aimed at alleviating the economic burden on its citizens.
The government commenced the sale of 30,000 metric tons of milled rice at a subsidized price of ₦40,000 per 50kg bag.
This initiative, spearheaded by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is part of broader efforts to enhance food security and stabilize food prices in the country.
Senator Abubakar Kyari, the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, announced the launch during an inauguration event in Abuja.
He emphasized the timeliness of this intervention, given the current economic challenges exacerbated by global disruptions such as COVID-19, the Russia-Ukraine war, and climate change.
"This food intervention can be said to be timely considering the times and challenges we are in as citizens of this great nation," Kyari stated.
To ensure fair distribution and prevent hoarding, the government has implemented strict verification measures. Buyers are required to present their National Identification Number (NIN) and phone numbers. Each individual is limited to purchasing one 50kg bag of rice.
Haruna Sule, Director of Strategic Grains Reserve at the Ministry of Agriculture, explained that civil servants could purchase the rice using their Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) and NIN. Payments will be made electronically, and receipts will indicate collection points to avoid overcrowding.
The initiative builds on previous government interventions, including the release of 42,000 metric tons of assorted food commodities to vulnerable groups.
The sale of the rice is expected to contribute massively to reducing the prices of other food substitutes and enhancing the well-being of Nigerians.
Dr. Mariya Bunkure, Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), highlighted the importance of this effort in improving the quality of life for citizens.
