FG Collaborating with EU to Extradite Simon Ekpa - Ministry of Defence Says

The Nigerian federal government is actively collaborating with the European Union to secure the extradition of Simon Ekpa, the self-proclaimed Prime Minister of the Biafra Republic Government in Exile (BRGIE).

This was confirmed by Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, who addressed the media on August 28th, 2024.

General Buba's statement came in response to a social media post by Simon Ekpa, in which he announced December 2, 2024, as the date for the presentation of the Biafra Republic map and its official declaration.

The Nigerian government, through diplomatic channels, aims to engage the Finnish government via the EU to facilitate Ekpa's extradition from Finland, where he resides.

Ekpa, born on March 21, 1985, is a Finnish politician and Biafran political activist. He has led the BRGIE and its military wings, the Biafra Defense Forces and the Biafra Liberation Army, since April 2023.

His activities have been controversial, with accusations of fueling insecurity in southeastern Nigeria through enforced sit-at-home orders, leading to violence against non-compliant residents.

The Nigerian military continues operations against the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and the Eastern Security Network (ESN), groups associated with Ekpa. Despite these efforts, the extradition plan has faced challenges, partly due to perceived support from the Finnish government for Ekpa's actions.

In his announcement, Ekpa emphasized that the unveiling of the "40 United States of Biafra" map is a step towards hastening Biafra’s independence. The Nigerian government remains resolute in countering these separatist movements and ensuring national security.
