The Federal Government of Nigeria has lifted the longstanding ban that restricted National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members from serving in private sector roles, including banks and oil and gas companies.

This change, announced by the Minister for Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, is set to take effect with the commencement of the 2024 Batch 'C' Orientation.

The original ban, implemented during the tenure of former Minister Bolaji Abdullahi, was designed to prevent the exploitation of corps members as cheap labor by private companies while promoting capacity building within the public sector.

However, the current administration under President Bola Tinubu has recognized the need to address rising youth unemployment and provide more diverse opportunities for young Nigerians.

Minister Olawande emphasized the importance of this policy shift, stating, "There is an urgent need to review this policy to expand the opportunity and access for corps members to serve in places that are relevant to their areas of study."

The new directive aims to align government agencies with the vision of the administration, initially focusing on Lagos and Abuja.

This development is expected to offer Nigerian youths valuable experience in their chosen fields, better preparing them for the competitive job market.

By allowing postings to select banks and other private sector organizations, the government hopes to counter the limitations imposed by the previous policy and enhance employment opportunities for young Nigerians.
