The Federal Ministry of Education has reinstated Professor Joseph Ikechebelu as the acting vice-chancellorNnamdi of Azikiwe University, Awka (UNIZIK).
This decision comes on the heels of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's directive to nullify the appointment of Professor Bernard Ifeanyi Odoh as the university's seventh substantive vice-chancellor.
The annulment was based on the appointment being deemed illegal by the now-dissolved 10th Governing Council.
The announcement was formalized in a letter from Nasir Sani-Gwarzo, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education.
The letter stated, “Sequel to the approval of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR vide letter Ref: PRES/84/EDU/10 dated 18th November, 2024 nullifying the appointment of Prof. Benard Ifeanyi Odoh... I am pleased to convey the approval of the Honourable Minister to reinstate you as the acting vice chancellor of the university with immediate effect.”
Professor Ikechebelu, who initially took on the role of acting vice-chancellor in June 2024, was removed by the same council in late July. His return marks a pivotal moment in the ongoing administrative changes at UNIZIK.
Alongside Ikechebelu, Victor Modebelu has been reinstated as the Acting Registrar, replacing Rosemary Nwokike, whose tenure was also terminated by presidential order.
