Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has come under fire for his remarks urging Nigerian youths to protest against the rising cost of living.
Amaechi expressed his surprise at the calmness with which Nigerians have responded to economic hardships, including high fuel prices and living costs. He stated, "I thought we would see protests in the streets, but it seems people are not expressing the kind of anger I expected."
The Federal Government, along with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), has criticized Amaechi's comments as "irresponsible" and "unpatriotic."
APC Spokesman Felix Morka described Amaechi's call for protests as insensitive, given his long tenure in various political positions, including two terms as Governor of Rivers State and Minister of Transport. Morka accused Amaechi of attempting to incite violence and exploit citizens' economic discomfort for selfish political objectives.
The APC urged Nigerians to dismiss Amaechi's call to anarchy and continue supporting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's efforts to transform the country's economy. The party emphasized that weaponizing protests is dangerous and counterproductive, especially when the government is working towards economic improvement for future generations.
