The Federal Government of Nigeria has issued an urgent advisory for residents living in floodplains to relocate immediately. This call comes in response to the release of water from Cameroon's Lagdo dam, which began on September 18, 2024. The water is being channeled into River Niger and River Benue, posing a significant flood risk to several states.

Umar Mohammed, Director General of the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), emphasized the critical nature of this situation.

"The water from Cameroon’s Lagdo Dam is being released already since yesterday (Wednesday) and there is an agreement that the water should be released in phases," he stated during an interview on Channels TV.

This phased release aims to help River Benue and River Niger manage the increased water volume and prevent flooding in 11 at-risk states, including Adamawa, Taraba, Benue, Nasarawa, Kogi, Edo, Delta, Anambra, Bayelsa, Cross Rivers, and Rivers.

To avoid a recurrence of the devastating floods experienced in previous years, the NIHSA has advised residents in these areas to move to safer locations.

"Everybody has their part to play; as the Federal Government is doing its part, our agency is doing its part, NEMA is prepared, individuals should also have to do their part. They have to move from the floodplain," Mohammed urged.

In addition to relocating, communities are encouraged to clear drainages to facilitate the free flow of water. "Water will find its way so the waterways should be cleared, and the drainages should be cleared to allow water to move. That is the responsibility of everybody," Mohammed added.

The NIHSA has submitted a report to the Presidency outlining further measures, including the de-silting of some dams in Nigeria, to mitigate future flooding risks. This proactive approach aims to safeguard affected communities and prevent potential disasters.
