Finnish authorities have announced that Simon Ekpa, a dual Nigerian-Finnish citizen and prominent figure in the pro-Biafra movement, is set to face trial in May 2025.

Ekpa, who leads the Autopilot faction of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has been charged with several serious offenses, including financing terrorism, inciting public crimes with terrorist intent, and violating Finland's Money Collection Act.

Ekpa was arrested on November 21, following extensive investigations into his activities from August 2021 to November 2024 in Lahti, Finland.

The Finnish police allege that his actions have contributed to violence and crimes against civilians in southeastern Nigeria.

According to Finnish authorities, "Ekpa’s actions have led to civilian deaths and widespread disruption in the region."

The Nigerian government has made efforts to extradite Ekpa, accusing him of exacerbating insecurity in southeastern Nigeria through his controversial sit-at-home orders, which are often enforced by violence.

Despite these efforts, Finland has emphasized its commitment to legal procedures, citing Ekpa's rights as a Finnish citizen. Senior Detective Superintendent Mikko Laaksonen noted the ongoing international cooperation in the case but refrained from disclosing further details due to the sensitive nature of the investigation.
