Five Killed As Sit-At-Home Enforcers Attack Anambra Communities

Esther

Chaos erupted in the Anambra Central Senatorial Zone on November 18, 2024 as gunmen enforcing an outlawed sit-at-home order launched simultaneous attacks on multiple communities.

The violence resulted in the deaths of at least five individuals and left several others injured. The assailants targeted Abatete, Abagana, and Ukpo communities, striking between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m.

In Abatete, located in Idemili North Local Government Area, three vigilantes attached to the town's President-General were fatally shot. The President-General himself sustained critical injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital.

A resident of Abatete expressed the community's distress, stating, "This senseless violence has left our community shaken. We are praying for the recovery of our PG."

Further violence unfolded at the Ukpo roundabout in Dunukofia Local Government Area, where a vigilante member and a motorcyclist were gunned down. Eyewitnesses described the attackers as emerging suddenly and shooting indiscriminately while shouting slogans such as "no Biafra, no freedom."

This unexpected assault plunged the region into panic, prompting warnings on social media for residents of Awka, the state capital, to remain indoors due to its proximity to the affected areas.

The Anambra State police have initiated an investigation into these heinous acts, with a spokesperson assuring the public that efforts are underway to apprehend the perpetrators.

However, details remain sketchy, and the police are actively working at the scene to gather more information. As fear grips the region, there is a growing call for heightened security measures to curb the violence and restore peace to the affected communities.
