Former Super Eagles striker, Odion Ighalo, has publicly defended his compatriot, Victor Osimhen, amid a wave of criticism following the latter's failed transfer from Napoli.

The 25-year-old Osimhen, who was born on December 29, 1998, in Lagos, Nigeria, found himself at the center of a complex transfer saga involving Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal and English club Chelsea.

Despite major interest, the move did not materialize before the close of the transfer window, leading to Osimhen's exclusion from Napoli's Serie A squad for the 2024-25 season.

Ighalo expressed his dismay at the negative comments directed at Osimhen by some Nigerians. He remarked, "No human being is perfect and we have all made mistakes in life, but seeing comments about this young man from his own country makes me really sad, without even knowing what happened." Ighalo further revealed that he had spoken to Osimhen and could sense the pain in his voice, emphasizing the emotional toll the situation had taken on the young striker.

Osimhen, who idolized Didier Drogba growing up, faced a challenging decision as he navigated the intricacies of the transfer market.

According to Sky Sport Italia, an agreement with Al-Ahli fell through due to unresolved fee issues, and Osimhen was dissatisfied with the personal terms offered by Chelsea. This left him in a precarious position, unable to secure a move away from Napoli.

Despite the setbacks, Ighalo remains optimistic about Osimhen's future, stating, "This young man plays with heart and pain for his country. Hmmm, it’s well, he will definitely be back stronger, we learn every day in life."
