Former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, has finally complied with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) invitation after months of resistance.
The former governor is embroiled in a 19-count money laundering charge amounting to ₦80 billion. Bello's media aide, Ohiare Michael, confirmed this development. According to Michael, Bello's decision to honour the EFCC invitation came after extensive consultations with his family, legal team, and political allies.
"The former Governor, who has great respect for the rule of law, sought only to ensure due process by enforcing his fundamental rights," Michael stated. Despite the serious allegations, Bello's legal team has been actively representing him in court. Michael expressed confidence that Bello's engagement with the EFCC would help clear his name.
"It is on record that he was the first Governor of Kogi State to implement an anti-corruption framework in the state," Michael added, highlighting Bello's support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration and its anti-corruption agenda.
Accompanied by several high-profile individuals, Bello's arrival at the EFCC headquarters marks a significant turn in his ongoing legal battle. "We hope the EFCC will remain professional and respect his fundamental rights," Michael noted.
This development follows Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court, Abuja, adjourning the case to September 25, 2024. The legal proceedings are being closely watched as they unfold, given the high stakes involved.
