A powerful call for peace echoed across the globe as France, Germany, and the United Kingdom jointly demanded an immediate ceasefire in the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza.
This unified stance was articulated through a joint statement by French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
The European leaders' appeal aligns with an earlier call for renewed negotiations from Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani, Egypt's President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, and US President Joe Biden.
The leaders emphasized the urgent need to halt hostilities and prevent further escalation in the volatile region. "We, the leaders of France, Germany, and the United Kingdom, welcome the tireless work of our partners in Qatar, Egypt, and the United States towards an agreement on a ceasefire and the release of hostages," the statement read.
"We endorse the joint statement of HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al Thani, President Sisi, and President Biden calling for the immediate resumption of negotiations."
The call for peace comes in the wake of heightened tensions following the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh on July 31, 2024, in Tehran.
Iran has vowed retaliation against Israel, raising fears of a full-blown regional war.
The European leaders urged Iran and its allies to refrain from actions that could further escalate the situation.
"We are deeply concerned by the heightened tensions in the region and united in our commitment to de-escalation and regional stability," the statement continued.
