France's 2018 World Cup-winning star Antoine Griezmann has announced his retirement from international football at the age of 33. The Atletico Madrid player, who has been a pivotal figure for the French national team over the past decade, made this announcement on Monday, September 30, 2024. Griezmann's illustrious international career spanned 10 years, during which he earned 137 caps and scored 44 goals for France.

Griezmann's decision to retire comes after a remarkable journey that saw him play a crucial role in France's 2018 World Cup victory, where he scored a goal in the final against Croatia, helping his team secure a 4-2 win in Moscow. He also contributed massively to France's runner-up finish in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and their triumph in the 2021 Nations League.

In an emotional social media post, Griezmann expressed his gratitude and reflected on his time with the national team: "It is with a heart full of memories that I am closing this chapter of my life," he wrote. "After 10 incredible years marked by challenges, successes, and unforgettable moments, it is time for me to turn a page and make way for the new generation."

Griezmann's versatility and technical prowess allowed him to excel in various offensive positions, making him one of the most valuable players for France. His ability to score and create goals, combined with his work-rate and positional sense, earned him praise from teammates and coaches alike. Didier Deschamps, the French national team manager, highlighted Griezmann's importance, stating, "Even if his club career is not over, Antoine will remain a monument of French football, one of the greatest players in its history."

Griezmann's last appearance for France was in a UEFA Nations League win against Belgium at the Groupama Stadium in Lyon earlier this month.
