In light of the recent surge in fuel prices across Nigeria, an important meeting has been scheduled between the Department of State Services (DSS) and petroleum marketers.
This meeting, set for October 9, 2024, was announced by the President of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) on October 8, 2024.
The primary focus will be on addressing the escalating price of Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) and its availability to oil marketers.
The backdrop to this meeting is a nationwide hike in fuel prices, with costs ranging from N950 to N1,200 or more per liter.
This situation has been exacerbated by recent developments in the Nigerian fuel market, including the commencement of petrol distribution by Dangote Refinery in September and the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited's (NNPCL) decision to increase petrol pump prices.
According to the IPMAN president, while specific details of the meeting have not been disclosed, it is clear that the discussions will center around the "petrol pump price and its availability to members." He emphasized, “Anywhere IPMAN is involved it is about the issue of petrol and its availability to members.”
This meeting is crucial as it aims to address the pressing issues affecting both consumers and marketers amid rising costs and supply challenges.
The outcome could potentially influence the dynamics of the Nigerian fuel market, impacting pricing strategies and distribution logistics.
While the exact agenda of the meeting remains undisclosed, the IPMAN president assured that further details would be provided post-meeting. This indicates a need for ongoing monitoring of the situation to understand its implications fully.
