Ghana's AFCON Dreams Crushed: Angola Draw Ends 20-Year Qualification Streak

The Black Stars of Ghana have failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), marking their first absence from the tournament since 2004. The decisive moment came on Friday, November 15, 2024, when Ghana was held to a 1-1 draw by Group F leaders Angola at the Estadio de Luanda.

The match began with promise for Ghana as Leicester City forward Jordan Ayew delivered a stunning free-kick in the 18th minute, giving the Black Stars an early lead. However, Angola responded with vigor, and despite missing a penalty earlier, they equalized in the 63rd minute through a powerful header by substitute Zini.

Ghana's coach, Otto Addo, expressed his disappointment after the match, stating, "We had our chances, but unfortunately, we couldn't capitalize on them. It's a tough pill to swallow."

The draw leaves Ghana at the bottom of their group, with no wins in five games, having accumulated only three points from two losses and three draws. This result ensures that their final game against Niger on November 18, 2025, will be merely a formality.

Angola, on the other hand, has secured their place in the upcoming AFCON, which will be hosted by Morocco from December 2025 to January 2026. They top the group with 13 points, followed by Sudan and Niger with 7 and 4 points, respectively.
