Governor Otti Seeks ₦50bn Damages from Facebook User Over Alleged Defamatory Post

F.Adenike

Abia State Governor Alex Otti has demanded ₦50 billion in damages from Hon. Tobias Chukwudi Egeonu, a public affairs analyst and political commentator, over alleged defamatory statements made on Facebook.

The controversy centers around a post titled "What Alex Otti Cannot Destroy Does Not Exist: Vol. 1," which Egeonu published on December 8.

Governor Otti's legal team, led by Dr. Sonny Ajala, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, claims that the post contains false allegations of financial mismanagement during Otti's tenure as Group Managing Director of the now-defunct Diamond Bank, as well as accusations of corruption in his current role as governor.

Ajala described the post as an "unwarranted online libelous publication" that has caused "unquantifiable mental torture, depression, denigration, corrosive erosion of reputation" to Governor Otti.

The demand for damages is accompanied by a call for a written retraction and a public apology from Egeonu.

Ajala insists that these must be published on Egeonu's Facebook page and in four national newspapers, including Thisday, Punch, Nation, and National Ambassador. Failure to comply within seven days will result in legal action, according to Ajala.
