The Guardian has announced it will cease posting content on Elon Musk's platform, X.
This decision, made public on November 13, 2024, shows the newspaper's stance against what it describes as "often disturbing content" prevalent on the site, including far-right conspiracy theories and racism.
The Guardian, which operates more than 80 accounts with approximately 27 million followers on X, stated that the negatives of remaining on the platform now outweigh the benefits. "We wanted to let readers know that we will no longer post on any official Guardian editorial accounts on the social media site X," the organization declared, emphasizing that the recent US presidential election coverage had crystallized their decision.
Despite this withdrawal, The Guardian reassures its audience that users can still share its articles on X, and reporters will continue to use the platform for newsgathering purposes.
The shift in strategy aims to direct readers to their website, theguardian.com, as social media becomes less central to their promotional efforts.
Elon Musk, who acquired X for $44 billion in 2022 and is known for his "free speech absolutism," responded dismissively to The Guardian's announcement, labeling the publication as "irrelevant" and a "laboriously vile propaganda machine."
