Gunmen Abduct Over 20 Nigerian Medical, Dental Students in Benue

Esther

Over twenty medical and dentistry students and a house officer have been abducted by gunmen in Benue State, Nigeria.

The students, hailing from the University of Maiduguri and the University of Jos, were en route to the annual convention of the Federation of Catholic Medical and Dental Students (FECAMDS) in Enugu when they were ambushed around 5:30 p.m. in the Otukpo area.

The Benue Police Command confirmed the abduction, with spokesperson SP Catherine Anene stating, "Yes, the report of kidnapping is true. The report was received around 5:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., and an investigation is ongoing."

This incident adds to the growing list of kidnappings in Nigeria, a practice that traces its roots back to the 1990s in the Niger Delta.

Initially, armed groups targeted foreign oil executives to pressure the government on issues related to oil pollution. Today, factors such as unemployment, corruption, and weak institutional frameworks continue to fuel this menace.

Dr. Boluwatife Afolabi highlighted the urgency of the situation, emphasizing the need for immediate action to rescue the abducted individuals. The identities of the kidnapped students and the House Officer have been disclosed, but their current whereabouts remain unknown.

As investigations proceed, the community and authorities are urged to collaborate in addressing the underlying causes of such criminal activities to prevent future occurrences.
