Vice President Kamala Harris on Saturday accepted an invitation from CNN to debate former President Donald Trump on October 23. This debate is set to take place at CNN’s studios in Atlanta and will follow the same format as the June 27 debate between Trump and President Joe Biden. The candidates will field questions from moderators for 90 minutes without a live studio audience.

The Harris campaign has been vocal about the need for another debate, with campaign chair Jen O’Malley Dillon stating, "Donald Trump should have no problem agreeing to this debate. It is the same format and setup as the CNN debate he attended and said he won in June, when he praised CNN’s moderators, rules, and ratings." Despite this, Trump has expressed reluctance, calling the October date "too late" and citing that voting has already started.

Trump's performance in the previous debate on September 10, hosted by ABC News in Philadelphia, was met with mixed reactions. While Trump claimed victory, most polls indicated that Harris emerged as the winner. Harris has since been advocating for another debate, emphasizing its importance for voters to see the candidates side by side.

CNN has reiterated the importance of the debate, stating, "Both Vice President Harris and former President Trump received an invitation to participate in a CNN debate this fall as we believe the American people would benefit from a second debate between the two candidates for President of the United States."

The upcoming debate mirrors the first 2024 presidential debate in June, which had huge repercussions. After a lackluster performance, Biden eventually withdrew from the race and endorsed Harris as the Democratic nominee. The October debate is expected to be another pivotal moment in the campaign, providing voters with a critical opportunity to assess the candidates' visions for America.

In addition to the presidential debate, the vice-presidential nominees are also set to debate. Trump's running mate, Ohio Sen. JD Vance, will face off against Harris' vice-presidential pick, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, on October 1 in a debate hosted by CBS.
