Health Workers Halt Strike, Demand Government Action

F.Adenike

Health workers under the Joint Health Sector Union (JOHESU) and the Assembly of Healthcare Professionals Association (AHPA) have decided to suspend their seven-day warning strike.

This decision, effective from midnight on October 31, 2024, comes after extensive negotiations with the Federal Government, culminating in a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

The strike, which began on October 25, was initiated to press the government to address several critical demands.

These include the "immediate implementation of the Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS) adjustment," payment of 25% CONHESS Review arrears, settlement of nine months' outstanding salaries for staff of Regulatory Agencies, and the reinstatement of funding to the Environmental Health Regulatory Council.

Mr. Kabiru Minjibir, the National Chairman of JOHESU, emphasized that the decision to suspend the strike was made "in the spirit of the Memorandum of Understanding and in general public interest."

The union has given the government a six-week timeline to meet these obligations, warning that an indefinite strike could follow if the demands are not met.

The communiqué issued by JOHESU highlighted that an "Expanded National Executive Council meeting shall be convened upon the expiration of the six weeks’ deadline to review developments and take appropriate decisions."
