House of Reps Advances Bill for Creation of New State in Second Reading

Esther

The House of Representatives on Thursday made major progress towards state expansion by passing a bill proposing the creation of Ogoja State during its second reading.

This legislative move, spearheaded by lawmaker Godwin Offiono and three co-sponsors, aims to amend the 1999 Constitution to potentially add a seventh state to Nigeria's South-South region.

Offiono emphasized that the bill is rooted in "equity," addressing long-standing calls for fair representation and enhanced local governance within the region.

The proposal encountered no objections from lawmakers, indicating widespread bipartisan support. Following the session, the bill was assigned to the House Committee on Constitution Review for further assessment of its viability before it returns for additional legislative scrutiny.
