Jamaican reggae icon Buju Banton has made a revelation about his heritage, declaring that he has roots in the Igbo tribe of Nigeria.
Speaking on the popular 'Drink Champs' podcast co-hosted by N.O.R.E and DJ EFN, Banton shared, "I am an Igbo man according to my bloodline." Banton elaborated on his lineage, explaining that his tribe, the Maroons, originated from the Igbo people of Nigeria.
The Maroons are known as Indigenous warriors who fought relentlessly against British colonizers.
"Maroons are some of the Indigenous warriors on my Island. We fought the British relentlessly. We are called Blackmaroons," he stated.
However, Banton expressed grave concerns about the current Jamaican government's actions, which he believes threaten the Maroon lands and their way of life.
He criticized the government's alleged practice of bringing Chinese and other foreigners into the Cockpit region, a sacred area for the Maroons.
"Our Indigenous way of life and our land are being threatened by the current government of Jamaica which seeks to bring Chinese and other nationalities into the Cockpit region which is an Indigenous sacred region to usurp us the Maroons as the warriors," Banton lamented.
