Atiku Abubakar, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has made it clear that he is not focused on the 2027 presidential election.
Instead, his primary concern lies with the immediate challenges facing Nigerians under the current administration of President Bola Tinubu.
Atiku's remarks came in response to advice from Chief Bode George, a member of the PDP Board of Trustees, who suggested that Atiku should abandon any plans to run for president in 2027.
George had urged Atiku to take inspiration from U.S. President Joe Biden and reconsider his political future. However, Atiku countered this advice by emphasizing the need to address the pressing issues affecting Nigerians today. "We cannot afford to put the cart before the horse. At this point, my preoccupation is not 2027.
My concern is about 2024, 2025, and 2026," Atiku stated through his spokesman, Paul Ibe. "It is about the plight of Nigerians who are literally going through hell because of the failed trial-and-error policies of this administration."
Atiku further criticized President Tinubu's policies, which he believes have exacerbated poverty and division within the country. He called on Bode George to redirect his counsel towards advising Tinubu to reassess these policies.
"Bode George himself should also turn his attention to counseling Tinubu to reassess some of his ill-advised policies that have deepened poverty and divisions in our country instead of prioritizing the politics of 2027," Atiku added.
The former Vice President highlighted the urgency of addressing the current hardships faced by Nigerians, stating that ongoing discussions about future elections are insensitive given the present struggles.
"The average citizen, and indeed all Nigerians, need to survive the tsunami that has become the administration of President Bola Tinubu," he said.
