I am Ready to Swear with Quran, I Did Not Steal as Governor - Nasir El-Rufai

The immediate past governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, has vehemently denied allegations of embezzling public funds during his tenure.

El-Rufai stated, "I’m ready to swear with the Quran. I didn’t steal as governor." This statement was made during a Hausa program aired on Freedom Radio station in Kaduna on October 1, 2024.

El-Rufai emphasized that his entry into politics was driven by a desire to serve the people rather than accumulate wealth. He remarked, "I joined politics only to serve the people of Kaduna State; I didn’t come to look for money, because I give glory to God that I’m content with what I had even before becoming governor."

The former governor criticized the Kaduna State House of Assembly for indicting his administration over the alleged misappropriation of more than N423 billion, citing a lack of detailed evidence. He expressed frustration over the accusations, stating, "We were accused of misappropriation of funds during our tenure without being given a specific area where the money went missing or who took it."

El-Rufai also highlighted the political motivations behind these allegations, noting that his allies are being targeted by the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

He said, "They are going after my allies by inviting them to the ICPC and EFCC with the intention of tarnishing their names."

In a final note of defiance and faith, El-Rufai shared that he had already prayed two Raka’at on Friday night, leaving everything to God's judgment. "This is why I’m not saying much about the issue," he concluded.
