Acclaimed R&B singer and three-time Grammy winner, Ne-Yo has openly shared his personal journey towards embracing non-monogamy, stating, "I don't have to lie anymore." This revelation comes after years of struggling with societal expectations and personal relationships.
Ne-Yo, whose real name is Shaffer Chimere Smith, was married to Crystal Renay Williams from 2016 until their divorce in 2023. The singer admitted that monogamy was not suitable for him, describing the realization as a significant relief, akin to "a weight lifted off my shoulders."
In a candid discussion on the YouTube show "Lemon Drop," Ne-Yo reflected on how he had spent considerable time pretending to be someone he wasn't, merely to conform to others' expectations.
He expressed regret over the "complete and utter time wasted" trying to fit into a mold that didn't align with his true self. Now, at 45, Ne-Yo is living authentically, which he says has improved all his relationships, including with his ex-wife, with whom he now shares a friendship.
Following his divorce, finalized in February 2023, Ne-Yo has embraced a lifestyle that aligns with his beliefs, even suggesting in a TMZ interview that polygamy should be legalized. He has been seen dating multiple women and is enjoying the freedom that comes with being honest about his needs and desires.
