Algerian boxer Imane Khelif made history at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris by winning the welterweight gold medal, becoming the first Algerian woman to achieve an Olympic boxing title.
Her victory, secured by unanimous decision, marked the first gold for Algeria in boxing since Hocine Soltani's win in 1996.
Khelif's journey was noteworthy not only for her athletic achievement but also for being embroiled in a gender dispute during the Games.

The controversy surrounding her participation dominated headlines and sparked widespread discussions on social media platforms. Despite these challenges, Khelif remained steadfast in affirming her identity.
She stated, "I am a woman like any woman. I was born a woman and I have lived as a woman but there are enemies to success and they can’t digest my success."
Her triumph was a culmination of eight years of relentless effort and dedication. Reflecting on her journey, Khelif expressed, "This is my dream. Eight years, my dream. I’m an Olympic champion and gold medallist. I’m very happy. Eight years, I work. Eight years, no sleep. Eight years, tired. Now I’m the Olympic champion. I’m very happy. I want to thank all the people (who have) come to support me. People, Algeria, and all the people, Paris."
