Trinidadian-born rapper, singer, and songwriter, Nicki Minaj has recently disclosed that she remains a non-citizen of the United States despite her substantial financial contributions to the country.
During a TikTok LIVE session with a fan, Minaj expressed her frustration over the situation, stating, "I’m not a citizen of America. Isn’t that crazy?" She clarified that she is still a citizen of Trinidad and Tobago, where she was born on December 8, 1982.
Minaj's journey to the United States began when she was five years old. Her parents, Carol and Robert Maraj, had immigrated to the U.S. earlier, leaving her behind with her grandmother in Trinidad. They reunited in Queens, New York, where Minaj grew up.
Despite her long-term residence and massive tax payments, she has yet to receive U.S. citizenship. "You would think that with the millions of dollars that I’ve paid in taxes to this country that I would have been given an honorary citizenship many, many, many thousands of years ago," she remarked.
The "Super Freaky Girl" star has always been proud of her Trinidadian roots, often celebrating her heritage through her music and public appearances. Last year, she collaborated with fellow Trinidadians Machel Montano and Destra on the remix of "Shake The Place," where she proudly declared, "Trinidad my country, the greatest carnival of all time."
Minaj's contributions to the music industry are monumental. She is one of the world's best-selling music artists, with over 100 million records sold globally. Her accolades include a Brit Award, five Billboard Music Awards, nine American Music Awards, eight MTV Video Music Awards, and three Guinness World Records, among others. Despite these achievements and her financial contributions, her path to U.S. citizenship remains unresolved.
In addition to her musical career, Minaj has ventured into various business endeavors, including becoming the creative director for Maxim in 2022 and founding the Heavy On It Records imprint in 2023. She also co-owns the sneaker brand Loci since 2024.
