IOC orders US gymnast Jordan Chiles to return bronze medal after appeal saga

Ololade

American gymnast Jordan Chiles has been ordered to return her bronze medal in the floor exercise. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced this decision early on Sunday, August 11th, 2024, following a ruling by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

The CAS voided an on-floor appeal by Chiles' coach, Cecile Landi, which had initially elevated Chiles from fifth to third place.

The controversy began when Landi's appeal added 0.1 points to Chiles' score, pushing her into the bronze medal position.

However, the Romanian Gymnastics Federation challenged the validity of this appeal, arguing it was filed four seconds beyond the one-minute deadline set by the International Federation of Gymnastics (FIG).

The CAS upheld Romania's challenge, leading to the reallocation of the bronze medal to Romania's Ana Barbosu.

This decision has sparked significant emotional turmoil for all athletes involved. Chiles, who had celebrated her third career Olympic medal, now faces the heartbreak of returning it.

Her teammates, including Simone Biles and Sunisa Lee, have expressed their support, criticizing the judges and the process that led to this outcome. Biles posted on Instagram, calling Chiles an "Olympic champ," while Lee condemned the judges' actions as "completely unacceptable."

The FIG has stated it will respect the CAS ruling, and the IOC confirmed it would work with the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) to ensure the medal is returned.

The USOPC, however, plans to appeal the decision, arguing that errors were made both in the initial scoring and during the CAS appeal process. They claim they were not given adequate time or notice to effectively challenge the decision.

Romanian gymnastics legend Nadia Comaneci has also weighed in, expressing concern for the mental health of the athletes involved. She urged for the protection of athletes' mental well-being amidst such controversies.

As the situation unfolds, the rapid sequence of events adds another layer to what has already been a tumultuous few days for Chiles, Barbosu, and other competitors. The final rankings now place Barbosu in third, Sabrina Maneca-Voinea in fourth, and Chiles in fifth.
