The Islamic Republic of Iran has shut down its airspace and cancelled all flights until Thursday morning. This decision comes in anticipation of potential Israeli retaliation following Iran's missile attacks on Tuesday evening.
According to Iran's state news agency, ISNA, a spokesman for the country's aviation authority confirmed that "all flights have been cancelled until 5:00 am (0130 GMT) on Thursday to maintain aviation security." Initially, the airspace closure was limited to Tehran, but it has now been extended nationwide.
The Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) stated that the missile strikes targeted three Israeli air bases and the headquarters of Mossad, Israel's foreign intelligence service. The IRGC claimed these attacks were in retaliation for the killings of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, Hezbollah Chief Hassan Nasrallah, and an Iranian general.
Reacting to the missile attacks, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared, "You’ve made a big mistake," signaling severe repercussions. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) also issued a stern warning to Iran, stating, "Expect consequences."
Adding to the complexity of the situation, former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley pointed out that "Israel doesn’t trust Biden, Harris," highlighting the strained relations between Israel and the current U.S. administration.
Furthermore, the United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, has been banned from entering Israel, indicating the broader international diplomatic strains this conflict is causing.
