Iran Defies Western Pressure, Refuses to Back Down on Israel Threat

Esther

Iran has firmly rejected calls from Western nations to renounce its threat of retaliation against Israel. This response followed the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, the political leader of Hamas, a group designated as a terrorist organization by both the EU and the U.S.

Haniyeh was killed along with his personal bodyguard in Tehran on July 31, during a visit for the swearing-in of Iranian President Masud Pezeshkian.

Although Israel has neither confirmed nor denied involvement in the attack, Iran, a staunch supporter of Hamas, holds Israel responsible and has vowed revenge.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry, represented by spokesman Nasser Kanani, dismissed the Western appeals as lacking "political logic" and contradicting "principles of international law."

Kanani's statement came after a joint call from the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Italy on August 12, urging Iran to "stand down its ongoing threats of a military attack against Israel."

The assassination of Haniyeh has heightened fears of a broader conflict in the region. Western leaders, including German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, have reached out to President Pezeshkian, urging de-escalation.

Despite these diplomatic efforts, Pezeshkian emphasized that while Iran is open to expanding interactions and resolving issues through negotiations, it will not succumb to "pressure, sanctions, bullying, and aggression." He asserted Iran's right to respond to aggressors based on international rules.
