It's for Student Welfare: Lagos Government Defends School Fee Increase to N100,000

Esther

The Lagos State Government has defended its decision to increase boarding fees in its model colleges from N35,000 to N100,000.

The government insists that the hike is necessary to ensure better welfare for students. Mr. Ganiu Lawal, Deputy Director of Public Affairs for the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, explained the rationale behind the fee increase in a statement released on Monday.

"The N35,000 boarding fees which were being paid since 2021, is not realistic in 2024," Lawal stated. He emphasized that the new fees, set to take effect in the 2024/2025 academic year starting September 15, 2024, are essential for covering costs related to feeding, janitorial services, and other hostel-related expenses per term.

The decision has not been well-received by all parents, some of whom have expressed their dissatisfaction. However, the government maintains that the welfare of the children is a priority. "This was not an easy decision, but the welfare of the children is a priority for the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education and the Lagos State Government," Lawal added.

Lawal also pointed out that enrolling a child in a boarding school is a choice made by parents, who are therefore expected to bear the associated costs. "Since enrolment of a child into a boarding school is an individual choice for every parent, they are expected to pay boarding fees," he said.
