Chairman of Heirs Holdings and a prominent entrepreneur, Tony Elumelu has openly endorsed the increasing trend of Nigerians migrating abroad, commonly referred to as 'japa', in search of better opportunities.
Elumelu's support for 'japa' is rooted in the progressively deteriorating Nigerian economy, which has compelled many skilled and educated citizens to seek better prospects overseas. This phenomenon has notably impacted various sectors, with the health sector being particularly affected.
Thousands of doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals have left Nigeria, contributing to a significant brain drain that threatens the country's medical infrastructure.
In his interview, Elumelu emphasized that no one should prevent Nigerians from looking towards foreign countries for better opportunities. He stated, "I support it, totally. I don’t have a problem with people saying ‘I’m going to Canada, the UK or the US.’"
He attributed this mass exodus to the lack of gainful employment opportunities within Nigeria, describing joblessness as "the betrayal of a generation."
According to Elumelu, individuals who have invested in their education but find themselves unable to achieve their aspirations due to limited opportunities at home are justified in seeking solutions elsewhere.
He remarked, "For people who decide to find solutions elsewhere, no one should stop them. But for those who decide to stay, they should try to create an impact and build a legacy."
