The British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Dr. Richard Montgomery, has confirmed that approximately 430,000 visa applications by Nigerians have been granted in 2024.

This figure represents a substantial number of individuals seeking to study and relocate to the United Kingdom within just seven months. The data, highlights a notable trend despite recent changes in UK immigration policies.

The approval rate comes amidst a backdrop of unrest in several UK cities, including Manchester, Liverpool, Hull, and Stoke, where violent demonstrations have led to over 400 arrests. The Nigerian government has issued a travel advisory urging its citizens to exercise caution.

Dr. Montgomery reassured the Nigerian community of their safety, stating, "The UK is home to people from diverse countries and races, and it will continue to welcome qualified individuals to live, study, and work. We will not accept discrimination or attacks against any community."

Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), confirmed that no Nigerians have been reported dead or affected by the unrest. She praised the UK Government for its prompt interventions and reminded Nigerians to stay vigilant and follow the travel advisory.

The surge in visa approvals also comes at a time when the UK has implemented new rules limiting dependents for international students unless enrolled in research-focused postgraduate programs. Despite these restrictions, the number of visas granted to Nigerians remains high, reflecting the strong demand for opportunities in the UK.
