Japan Stops Flights And Trains as Another Typhoon Ampil Approaches

Esther

Japan is currently grappling with travel disruptions as Typhoon Ampil approaches, coinciding with the nation's "obon" holiday week.

This period typically sees millions of Japanese citizens returning to their hometowns, but this year, their plans are being thwarted by severe weather conditions.

Typhoon Ampil, categorized as "strong," is expected to skirt the Tokyo region, home to nearly 40 million people, before moving up the Pacific coast on Friday and Saturday.

The typhoon follows closely on the heels of Tropical Storm Maria, which recently dumped record rains across the country.

In response to the impending storm, major airlines have taken drastic measures. ANA has cancelled approximately 280 domestic flights on Friday, affecting over 60,000 passengers.

Similarly, Japan Airlines has scrapped 191 domestic and 26 international services, impacting 38,600 customers.

The country's extensive bullet train network is also facing cancellations, particularly the busy route between Tokyo and Nagoya.

At 9:00 am (0000 GMT), Ampil was located 300 kilometers (190 miles) off the remote Pacific island of Chichijima, packing gusts up to 180 kilometers per hour.

Disaster Management Minister Yoshifumi Matsumura has urged the public to stay informed about evacuation advisories and take early steps to ensure their safety.

"We urge the public to stay informed about evacuation advisories and take early steps to seek safety," he stated during a regular briefing.

The Japan Meteorological Agency has issued warnings for violent gusts, flooding, overflowing rivers, and landslides, particularly in eastern regions.

The agency's concerns are backed by recent studies indicating that typhoons in the region are becoming more intense and lasting longer due to climate change.

Researchers from universities in Singapore and the United States analyzed over 64,000 modelled historic and future storms to arrive at these findings.
