Onyinyechi Mark in a historic achievement at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games has secured Nigeria's first gold medal by setting a new world record in the women's up to 61kg powerlifting category.

The 23-year-old athlete lifted an astounding 150kg, surpassing her closest competitors, China's Jianjin Cui, who lifted 140kg, and Mexico's Amalia Pérez, who managed 130kg.

Mark's remarkable performance not only earned her the top podium spot but also shattered the previous record held by her compatriot Lucy Ejike. This victory signifies Nigeria's continued dominance in Paralympic powerlifting, a sport where the nation has historically excelled.

At the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, Nigeria had already demonstrated its prowess by securing ten medals, including four golds.

The Nigerian Paralympic Committee has consistently supported and developed its para-athletes, leading to such outstanding achievements on the global stage.
