The Nigerian Federal Government has announced the formation of a technical committee to review all existing dams across the country. This decision was revealed by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Ibrahim Mohammed, following a Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting chaired by President Bola Tinubu on September 23, 2024.
"The government is not unmindful that some of the dams which were constructed over some decades might be in need of maintenance," said Minister Mohammed. "Hence, the need for the technical committee to review their durability."
The primary objective of this committee is to mitigate flooding issues that have plagued various regions in Nigeria. The recent floods in Maiduguri have highlighted the urgent need for such measures. In addition to setting up the technical committee, President Tinubu has also ordered the establishment of a Disaster Relief Fund specifically for the victims of the Maiduguri floods.
This initiative is part of a broader strategy by the Nigerian government to address both domestic and international challenges. Concurrently, Nigeria continues to advocate for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council at the UNGA-79 conference, emphasizing its role in global diplomacy.
