Kidnapping for ransom has emerged as Nigeria's most-reported crime case under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

According to StatiSense, which quoted 2023 data from Nigeria’s Ministry of Police Affairs, "kidnapping cases have outperformed murder, banditry, terrorism, and armed robbery in terms of reports in Nigeria."

This alarming trend highlights the escalating insecurity that continues to plague the nation despite President Tinubu's promises to address the issue.

A zonal analysis reveals that kidnapping crimes are most prevalent in the North Central (38.51 percent), North East (42.11 percent), North West (49.71 percent), South East (30.61 percent), and South-South (36.73 percent) regions.

The South West stands as an exception, where murder crime cases are more common, accounting for 29.87 percent of reported incidents.

The gravity of the situation is signified by recent events. For instance, bandits recently stormed the Ushafa community in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), killing a man identified as Mr. Felix Chuks and abducting his entire family.

Additionally, 20 medical students were abducted in Benue State last week but have since been released. In another harrowing incident, 287 pupils were kidnapped from a government secondary school in Kuriga, Kaduna State.
