The Labour Party Caucus in the House of Representatives vehemently rejected the outcome of the recent Edo State governorship election, branding it as the "theft of the season."
The caucus, led by Deputy Minority Whip George Ozodinobi, held a press conference at the National Assembly to voice their grievances, claiming that their candidate, Olumide Akpata, was unfairly defeated.
Ozodinobi described the election results as “the highest theft of the season,” asserting that “the electorate were clearly robbed of their votes, and their will and wishes dashed.” He emphasized the significant support for their 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, who had campaigned vigorously across the state.
Despite the massive crowds drawn by the Obidient movement during the campaign, Akpata received an unexpectedly low number of votes.
“It is on record that our leader and presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, His Excellency Peter Obi, campaigned vigorously for our gubernatorial candidate in every nook and cranny of the state. Of course, the whole world witnessed the massive crowds that the Obidient movement pulled wherever he went during the campaign. Yet, Chief Akpata was allocated paltry votes in a state where, just about a year and seven months ago, the Labour Party had one Senator and two House of Reps members,” Ozodinobi stated.
When questioned about potential legal action to contest the election results, Ozodinobi mentioned that consultations are ongoing.
This controversy adds to the broader discourse on the monetization and systemic issues plaguing Nigerian elections, as highlighted by other political figures and parties.
