The Lagos State Government has announced an environmental policy shift by planning to ban the circulation of single-use plastics and sachet water starting January 2025.
This initiative, confirmed by Tokunbo Wahab, the state Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, aims to establish comprehensive policy guidelines for managing plastic waste.
The goal is to foster a healthier and more sustainable environment in Lagos. During a stakeholders' workshop, where the announcement was made, participants urged the government to consider a phased implementation rather than an outright ban.
They believe this approach will ensure better compliance and ease the economic burden on citizens during challenging times.
The proposed ban has sparked mixed reactions; while environmental advocates welcome the positive ecological implications, some citizens express concerns about potential hardships for the general populace.
