The Lagos State Government has announced plans to demolish over 280 properties in the Mayegun Waterfront Scheme, located in the Eti Osa Local Government Area, due to alleged encroachment on government land. This move follows a recent inspection that identified numerous violations within the scheme.
Commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure Development, Yacoob Ekundayo Alebiosu, revealed that property owners and occupiers would be given a seven-day ultimatum to present documentation and approvals justifying their land occupation. "This unlawful activity must end. The state government will no longer condone or accept encroachments on its properties," Alebiosu stated.
The Mayegun Waterfront Scheme, established in the 2000s, is divided into three sections: Parcels A, B and C. The current focus is on Parcel B, which contains a mix of gazetted village excisions, valid certificates of occupancy, and encroached properties. The inspection revealed that out of the 280 properties, 208 are under construction and 72 are undeveloped plots.
Alebiosu emphasized that strict enforcement measures would follow the issuance of contravention notices. "We are addressing issues in Okun Ajah and will take similar actions in Mayegun," he warned.
Last month, the state government served contravention notices to over 200 property owners in the Okun Ajah Waterfront scheme for similar violations.
The Commissioner urged property owners to voluntarily remove their structures before receiving formal contravention notices. "Appropriate steps will follow the issuance of contravention notices," he added.
