The National Coordinator of Nigeria's National Counter-Terrorism Centre, Major General Adamu Laka, has sought to reassure the public regarding the emerging Lakurawa terrorist group.
Despite concerns, he emphasized that the group's membership is limited to fewer than 200 individuals. "There is no cause for alarm," he stated, stating ongoing efforts to neutralize their threat.
The Lakurawa group initially gained entry into communities by offering protection against bandits but soon began imposing taxes and exerting control.
This shift in behavior has prompted a coordinated response from the military and security agencies.
Major General Laka highlighted the strategic actions being taken to dismantle the group, noting, "Our security forces are deploying their full might, resulting in the capture and neutralization of many of the group’s leaders and members."
The government's proactive approach includes preventive measures, heightened security protocols, and the use of advanced technology for monitoring and intelligence gathering. Laka stressed the importance of public cooperation, urging Nigerians to report suspicious activities and refrain from spreading unverified information, which could inadvertently amplify fear.
He also pointed to initiatives aimed at building resilient communities through programs designed to prevent extremism by fostering unity across diverse communities. "With public support and a unified effort, we will overcome this threat in due time," he assured.
