Former US President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris are tied at 48% support each, according to the latest national NBC News poll. This deadlock comes as Trump gains momentum from foreign-based Republicans returning to the U.S. after last month's debate, alongside favorable assessments of his previous term.

Meanwhile, Harris's popularity has seen a decline since her summertime boost, with significant gender gaps in voter support.

Pollster Jeff Horwitt noted, "As summer has turned to fall, any signs of momentum for Kamala Harris have stopped," highlighting the challenges she faces in maintaining her lead. Republican pollster Bill McInturff added that Harris is contending with "headwinds," including perceptions that she does not represent a change from President Joe Biden.

A critical issue driving voter motivation in the 2024 election is abortion, with many voters viewing it as a top concern. The poll also reveals a degree of uncertainty among the electorate, with 10% of voters open to changing their minds and some still undecided.

Third-party candidates could play a pivotal role, slightly favoring Trump when included in the ballot test.

The outcome of this election may ultimately depend on which party can better mobilize its supporters.

In scenarios where Republican turnout is higher, Trump leads by 2 points, whereas a Democratic turnout advantage gives Harris a 3-point edge. These results fall within the poll's margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points, underscoring the competitive nature of the race.

As the election approaches, both candidates face significant challenges. Horwitt questioned, "Can [Harris] meet the moment and fill in the blanks that voters have about her?" while also asking if Trump can convince voters that "the chaos and personal behavior that bothered so many about his first term will not get in the way of governing and representing America."

The coming weeks will be crucial in determining whether either candidate can overcome these hurdles and secure victory.
