Deji Adeyanju and Partners, a legal firm led by renowned human rights lawyer Deji Adeyanju, has withdrawn from representing Stephen Abuwatseye, a Bolt driver who alleged he was assaulted by Abia lawmaker Alex Ikwechegh.
This decision comes after Abuwatseye issued a public apology to the lawmaker, an action that has sparked significant backlash among Nigerians.
The case initially gained traction when Abuwatseye approached Adeyanju’s firm on October 28, 2024, seeking redress for the alleged assault. The firm took on the case pro bono, leading to the arraignment of the accused lawmaker.
However, recent developments prompted the firm to reassess its involvement. In a statement titled “Public Statement on the Alleged Assault of Mr Stephen Abuwatseye: Withdrawal of Legal Representation,” Adeyanju announced the firm's withdrawal, citing "professional and ethical concerns."
The withdrawal signifies the complex interplay between legal advocacy and ethical standards, particularly in cases involving public figures. Adeyanju emphasized the firm's commitment to maintaining "the highest ethical standard in the legal profession," a stance that reflects broader challenges within the Nigerian legal system regarding justice and human rights advocacy.
The incident has ignited discussions about the role of legal professionals in navigating socio-political landscapes, especially when power dynamics are at play. Many Nigerians have expressed disappointment over Abuwatseye's apology, arguing that justice should prevail over conciliatory gestures.
