Carsley is poised to take over as the interim manager of the England national team for the upcoming international break in September. This decision follows Gareth Southgate's departure after Euro 2024.
Carsley, who has been at the helm of England's Under-21 team, is expected to guide the senior squad through their Nations League matches against the Republic of Ireland and Finland. His appointment comes as no surprise to many within the Football Association (FA), given his extensive experience and successful track record with the youth teams.
"Lee Carsley has been preparing for this role throughout his coaching career," insiders at the FA revealed. "His dedication to the pathway from the under-21s to the first team has always earned our approval."
Carsley's journey to this pivotal role has been marked by notable achievements. He led the England Under-21 team to victory in the European Championship last year, defeating Spain with a squad that included rising stars like Cole Palmer, Anthony Gordon and Levi Colwill. His association with the English FA dates back to 2015, and he has garnered admiration for his work with various age groups.
A former midfielder, Carsley made his name at Derby County and spent a significant part of his playing career at Everton. He also represented the Republic of Ireland internationally, earning 40 caps. His coaching career began at Coventry City and he has since held positions at Brentford, Manchester City and Birmingham.
In September 2020, Carsley was appointed as the head coach of England's Under-20 team, marking the beginning of his rapid ascent in the coaching ranks. Despite being courted by the Republic of Ireland for their managerial position, Carsley chose to remain with England, possibly eyeing the opportunity to succeed Southgate.
