The Libyan Football Federation (LFF) has officially rejected the Confederation of African Football's (CAF) verdict regarding the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Nigeria.
The CAF Disciplinary Committee ruled that Libya forfeited the match, scheduled for October 15 in Benghazi, resulting in a 3-0 victory awarded to Nigeria. Additionally, Libya was fined $50,000 for breaching Article 31 of the AFCON Regulations and Articles 82 and 151 of the CAF Disciplinary Code.
This decision has been met with strong opposition from the LFF, which considers the ruling "unjust and malicious," as stated by LFF President Nasser Al-Suwai’i. He alleged that the Nigerian Football Federation's influence within CAF contributed to this outcome.
In response, the LFF has filed an appeal against the sanctions, engaging Tunisian lawyer Ali Abbas to defend their position. Despite CAF's initial rejection of further appeals, the LFF is determined to pursue the matter, even considering escalating it to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) if necessary.
The appeal's outcome could massively impact the ongoing qualification process, especially for Nigeria, which now requires only one more point to secure its place in the competition in Morocco.
