Luton Town FC Condemns 'Unacceptable' Racist Abuse Directed Towards Nigerian Player Elijah Adebayo

Luton Town Football Club has strongly condemned the recent racist abuse directed at their forward, Elijah Adebayo.

The 26-year-old footballer, who was born in Brent, England, and is of Nigerian descent, was targeted with a racially abusive message on social media during Luton Town's match against Sunderland, which ended in a 2-1 defeat.

This incident marks yet another distressing episode for Adebayo, who has been subjected to similar abuse multiple times over the past few years.

In response to this unacceptable behavior, Luton Town issued a statement expressing their anger and frustration, emphasizing that they stand firmly by Adebayo.

The club stated, "We're angry, upset and frustrated to report that racist abuse has been directed towards Elijah Adebayo." They further addressed the perpetrator directly, saying, "To the individual who cowardly dropped into Elijah's DMs: We know who you are and you know who you are. You're not a faceless account, one which we have sadly become accustomed to reporting."

The social media company Meta took swift action by removing the offending Instagram account. Luton Town has been proactive in combating racism, having participated in the Premier League's No Room for Racism campaign and organizing anti-discrimination workshops at local schools.

The club reiterated its commitment to supporting initiatives that promote inclusivity and equality, stating, "We are all Luton and we will continue to support and champion these initiatives until such time that the message gets through to the ignorant minority."

Adebayo, who joined Luton Town in February 2021 from Walsall, has been an integral part of the team, making major contributions on the field. Despite the challenges he faces off the pitch, Adebayo remains a key player for Luton Town, having scored a hat-trick in a Premier League match against Brighton & Hove Albion earlier this year.
